Sar shan? (How are you?) This is Atchin Tan in English Romani: English with Romani words, the way many families talk. We do our best with the translation, using words from lists made with Romanichal speakers. Families say and spell words differently, and legal and safety words stay in English so nothing is misunderstood. Can you help us get it right? Get in touch.

Find a place that will have you.

A free map of authorised Traveller sites, transit pitches and parks that welcome Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller families. Made by the community, for the community.

In development. Coming to iPhone and Android, England and Wales first.

Why we are building it

Travelling families still need safe, legal places to stop. There are not enough of them, and the ones that do exist can be hard to find, hard to trust and hard to get into. A Freedom of Information survey by Friends, Families and Travellers found that 92% of local authorities across the UK had no transit provision at all. Read their summary of the research.

Atchin Tan will not fix the shortage of sites. What it can do is make the places that do exist easier to find, easier to trust and easier to keep open for the next family.

What the app will do

Show you where you can stop

One map of council sites, transit pitches, temporary stopping places and parks that have agreed to welcome Travelling families. Each one shows what kind of place it is and how long you can stay.

Tell you what to expect

Contact details, facilities, number of pitches and how welcoming a place is, from people who have been there. Every listing says when it was last checked.

Work with a weak signal

Download your area once and use the map and site details offline. Simple screens, big buttons, nothing cluttered.

Help you leave it tidy

Fresh pani, chemical waste and bin points on the map, plus short tips for leaving a place as you found it, so it stays open to the next family.

What we stand for

Authorised places only

We list council sites, licensed private sites and parks whose owners have said yes. We do not list or support stopping on land without permission.

Checked by people who know

Every place is marked Official, Community verified or Unverified, and new places are checked by a moderator before they appear on the map.

Your privacy comes first

No selling data, no tracking where you go, no ads. You will need a phone number to post, which keeps out bots and fake listings, but you can browse without an account.

Owned by the community

We plan to run Atchin Tan as a not-for-profit that puts any surplus back into the community. Read more about us.

Own a site or park?

You choose whether your place is listed, and you can have it taken down at any time.
